Abstract
Waqf is similar to the endowment concept but different in purpose and motives. In Islam, apart from pleasing Allah, waqf is something given for public use or something allocated for needs related to public Islamic utilization—for instance, land that would be allocated for religious needs such as cemeteries, constructing mosques, schools, or other related usage that would bring benefits for the Muslim ummah. Previously in Malaysia, waqf was practiced by donating fixed assets for the utilization of the Muslim ummah locally, such as plots of land for cemeteries, or for constructing mosques or schools for the local community’s benefit. Only recently, cash waqf was introduced to the Malaysian public, which involves donating liquid assets. This study aims to discuss issues and challenges in generating cash waqf among the Malaysian public. The method of library research has been used to acquire relevant reference materials to discuss the subject. This paper has identified several issues and highlighted significant and practical strategies for engendering cash waqf to ensure the sustainability of the Muslim ummah.
